Common Automotive Issues that Cause No-Start

When you first notice that your car is struggling to start, you'll want to be proactive about getting to the shop so the mechanic can diagnose the issue. If you delay, there's a much greater chance of the issue escalating to the extent that it prevents your vehicle from firing up at all. Consequently, you could find yourself stranded and in need of assistance. At Landmark Auto & Diesel Repair, our local mechanics can accurately pinpoint the problem that is causing your car to have trouble with starting up. Then we'll work efficiently to get the repairs done ASAP so you can get back behind the wheel quickly.

What is preventing my engine from starting?

Starter failure is one of the most familiar reasons that engines don't fire up. A classic sign of a faulty starter is that you try to start your engine but only get a clicking noise. Another indication of starter failure is that your car won't start but your dash lights will turn on. A bad fuel pump can also cause no-start. There's reason to suspect fuel pump trouble if you notice sputtering, decreasing MPGs, or power loss. There are a couple of other common fuel system-related problems that can prevent your car from starting up reliably. For one, a clogged fuel filter can impede the proper flow of fuel, which could lead to no-start. To avoid this issue, it's best to change out your fuel filter every 20,000 to 30,000 miles. Dirty fuel injectors can also prevent your engine from starting. Pouring a fuel additive into your tank can be helpful with cleaning injectors.

A battery/charging system problem might also prevent your car from starting. When you install a brand new battery in your car, it should work reliably for at least three years. If your battery dies sooner and not because of something like leaving your headlights on, then a bad alternator could be the culprit. Malfunctioning electrical accessories are another symptom of alternator failure.
